Baseball Suffers 6-4 Loss to Augusta

VALDOSTA, Ga. The Augusta Jaguars scored six runs in the second and third innings and held off the Valdosta State baseball team the rest of the way to outlast the Blazers 6-4 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park in Valdosta, Ga.

Valdosta State opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, when Kendall Herron, Cody Ilgenfritz, and Tyler Homer delivered three consecutive hits and both Herron and Ilgenfritz came in to score. The 2-0 lead didn't last long for VSU, however, as Augusta produced five hits in the top of the second inning and plated four runs to reclaim the lead.

The Jaguars added two more in the top half of the third with four more hits, two of which were for extra bases. Valdosta State picked up an additional run of their own in the bottom of the third against starter David Hagelston to cut the deficit to 6-3, but a Kendall Herron homer in the bottom of the 7th was the only other tally the Jaguars would allow.

Reliever Cody Pugh came on in the fourth and dealt three scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve to 4-0 on the season, while Daniel Williams suffered the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year after allowing six runs and nine hits.

Valdosta State racked up 12 hits in the game, with multiple hits from five different players, including two from each of the top four spots in the lineup. The deficit proved to be insurmountable for the red and black, however, and the loss dropped the Blazers to 28-16 on the year. The Jaguars improved to 17-23 overall with the victory.

Next up for VSU, it's a trip to Cleveland, Miss., where the Blazers will take on Delta State for a three-game road set. The series will kick off on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. EST with a doubleheader.
