ROME, Ga. – The Valdosta State baseball team posted a 6-2 win over Shorter before a 2-0 loss in game two led to a doubleheader split in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Rome, Ga.
Valdosta State scored early and often throughout game one, taking advantage of three Shorter miscues with the help of 11 hits over the course of the nine-inning affair.
Ryan Slaughter helped the cause with a solo shot in the fifth inning to give VSU the deciding run in the game, but
Dalton Murray struck for a majority of the Blazers' damage with two hits, including a two-run double in the eighth. The double accounted for two of Murray's game-high three RBI's in the game.
For the second straight weekend, reigning GSC Pitcher of the Week
Hunter Jones gave the Blazers a stellar performance on the hill to secure the win and improve to a perfect 3-0 on the season. With eight strikeouts in the game against just three walks, Jones allowed just two runs in the game and improved his average against to a league-best .158 on the year.
In game two,
Austin Hamilton continued Valdosta State's incredible day on the mound with a sparkling outing, during which the junior struck out 12 of the 24 batters he faced over the course of just six innings. Unfortunately for Valdosta State, his effort went for naught, as Shorter's Jacob Ramos nearly matched Hamilton's performance with an 11-strikeout, two-hit, shutout in the seven-inning game.
The loss for Hamilton dropped his season record to 3-2, despite the fact that he currently leads the Gulf South Conference in both ERA (1.51) and strikeouts (56). Ramos, meanwhile, improved to 3-2.
Shorter's deciding run came in the first inning of the contest, after Hamilton struck out leadoff hitter Blaze Vazquez, who reached safely anyway by way of a third-strike passed ball. Vazquez came around to score as an unearned run later in the half inning, thanks to an RBI single by Jack Leech.
With the split, Valdosta State moved to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in the conference. Shorter slid to 14-7 overall and 5-6 against conference opponents.
Valdosta State will shoot for the series win on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
