VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State volleyball's bid for a major upset in Gulf South Conference play came up short, as the Blazers fell 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 7-15) to the West Florida Argonauts on Tuesday night at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga.
The Argonauts took the Blazers down in the opening set, but a strong defensive effort in the second frame, along with surges on the attack by both
Tristyn Sells and
Chloe' Chubilleau, helped Valdosta State fire back with a convincing 25-20 victory in the second frame.
Valdosta State built on on the momentum, firing on all cylinders in the third set for a dominant 25-16 win. The Argonauts, who entered the night undefeated in GSC play on the season with a 7-0 league record, regained their composure in the fourth, and closed out the come from behind victory with a runaway 15-7 win in the fifth and final frame.
Both Chubilleau and Sells posted season highs in kills with 16 and 18, respectively, while
Katie McInnis also reached double figures in the kill column with 10. Sells' .469 hitting effort came just shy of a career high mark of .500, which she delivered almost exactly one year ago in an October 23rd matchup against West Georgia.
The biggest thorn in the side of the Blazers throughout the contest was Rachel Neblett, who swung for 19 kills and a .444 hitting percentage.
Defensively for the Blazers,
Sydney Chick picked up a team high 24 digs, while junior
Sara Dandridge posted yet another double-double with 11 digs and a season-high 47 assists.
The loss dropped VSU to 9-11, 4-4 on the year in GSC action, while the Argonauts improved to 18-6 overall and 8-0 against league opponents.
Valdosta State will remain at home this weekend for two contests, starting with a matchup against West Alabama on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
