West Georgia Spoils Senior Day With 3-1 Win Over Soccer

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of the visiting West Georgia Wolves on Sunday afternoon in Gulf South Conference action at the VSU Soccer Complex in Valdosta, Ga.

The loss marked the first for Valdosta State since the Florida Southern game on September 27th and dropped the Blazers to 9-4-2 overall and 7-3-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Wolves' critical win lifted UWG to 7-7 overall and 6-6 in league play.

West Georgia used two first half goals to set the tone for the match, forcing the Blazers to play from behind a two-score deficit after the 38th minute. In the second half, an aggressive VSU offense fired off 11 shots against just seven for the Wolves, but several near misses never allowed the Blazers to recover.

In the 85th minute, Kelly Geary used a free kick from Katie Mitchell to finish on a header, which put the exclamation point on the day for the Wolves and ultimately kept their hopes alive for playoff contention.

Valdosta State's only score came at the 87:24 mark, when Haille Paterson lifted a soft shot over the charging Jackie Donaldson, who notched eight saves in the contest. Paterson's goal marked her fourth of the year.

Prior to the game, each of Valdosta State's nine seniors were recognized in front of their home crowd.

Next up for Valdosta State, it's the final two games of the regular season, as the Blazers travel to Tennessee for a pair of respective matchups against Union and Christian Brothers. The Union contest will take place at 6:00 p.m. EST on Friday, October 20th, and the regular season concludes with a 2:00 p.m. EST showdown with Christian Brothers on Sunday, October 22nd.
