Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Clayton State Tops Blazer Soccer 2-1

VALDOSTA, Ga. Clayton State connected on just two of 22 attempts in Wednesday's midweek non-conference matchup against the Valdosta State soccer team in Morrow, Ga., but the two scores were enough to edge out the Blazers and earn the Lakers a 2-1 win.

The Lakers stayed on the attack throughout the entirety of the first half, peppering Blazer keeper Alyssa Curtis with 14 shots in the first half alone. Curtis weathered the storm with aplomb, however, turning away all but one deep Tovin Saleh shot late in the half. The shot was just out of Curtis' reach and gave CSU a 1-0 advantage just before halftime.

Valdosta State's defense slowed the Lakers down in the second half, but with just under 10 minutes remaining, Renee Gillespie offered up a critical goal for Clayton State from the right side. The goal proved to be the game-winner for the Lakers, as VSU's Megan Muffley struck just eight minutes later for a low goal from the right side.

The goal represented the first of Muffley's career, but time expired before the Blazers were able to pick up any momentum from the score.

Valdosta State fell to 0-2 following the loss, while the Lakers improved to 3-0.

Next up for the Blazers, it's a trip to Milledgeville, Ga. for the Bobcat classic at Georgia College and State. The Blazers will face off against the Bobcats on Friday, September 9th at 7:00 p.m. and will follow up with another contest against Armstrong State on Sunday afternoon at noon.
