VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State fell 2-1 in an absolute heartbreaker on Friday night in Gulf South Conference action against the visiting Wolves of West Georgia at the VSU Soccer Complex.
West Georgia struck first early in the first period when Susana Abundiz fired a shot off the hands of Blazer keeper Alyssa Curtis. The parry went right back to Abundiz near the goal on the left side, and the UWG forward capitalized on the rebound opportunity to give West Georgia a 1-0 advantage.
The score held throughout the remainder of the period and well into the second half, until Kayla Robles beat her defender down the right side before lifting a beautiful ball to the center. With less than 17 minutes to play in regulation, junior forward Maggie VanHusan elevated and placed a perfect header into the right side for her first goal of the season.
Neither team broke through before the end of regulation, but the Wolves were able to capture the win and negate a gutsy effort by Valdosta State when Alexis Lewis found the upper right corner inside the 9:00 minute mark to end the match.
With the loss, Valdosta State fell to 0-7-2 overall and 0-4-1 in GSC play. Meanwhile, UWG improved to 7-3 overall and 3-2 against league opponents.
The Blazers return to action on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. with a makeup contest against the Lions of Saint Leo on the road in Saint Leo, Fla. Coverage of the contest will be available at www.vstateblazers.com.
