WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Rollins volleyball team took Valdosta State the distance, but the Blazers used a breakout offensive performance by
Antia Rodriguez-Sanchez to outlast the Tars 3-2 (25-20, 25-27, 23-25, 25-14, 15-11) in Division II volleyball South Region action on Tuesday night.
After Valdosta State took a 1-0 lead with a relatively comfortable 25-20 victory in set one, a slugfest ensued in the second set. The teams traded points throughout the frame, which featured 14 ties, before the Tars claimed a 25-23 win to knot things up at 1-1.
Rollins used the momentum to notch 17 kills en route to yet another tight third set triumph (27-25) that included six lead changes throughout.
With their backs against the wall, the Blazers responded in a big way to take an early 10-6 lead. Head Coach
Mike Swan's team came together to swing for .318 in the set with 17 kills and just three errors to force a fifth frame.
In the deciding set, the Blazers took advantage of a poor .043 effort by the Tars and used a series of big finishes by both
Lea Jaklen and Rodriguez-Sanchez to cap off the comeback and claim the 15-11 victory.
Rodriguez-Sanchez wrapped the night up with a season-high 22 kills against only six errors in 52 attempts for a .308 hitting percentage. Meanwhile,
Natalia Campos had another big defensive night with 28 pickups, and
Jessica Codato posted another double-double with 67 assists and a whopping 22 digs.
The Blazers lifted their record to a perfect 10-0 start, which represents the team's best start since the program went 16-0 to open up the 1999 season. Rollins record fell to 1-10 overall.
Valdosta State will try and extend their streak this Friday night at The Complex in a Gulf South Conference Showdown at 6:00 p.m. against the Union Lady Bulldogs.
