Blazers Walk Off With 3-2 Win Over West Georgia

VALDOSTA, Ga. Kellan Baily pitched his first career complete game to lead Valdosta State to a 3-2 victory over West Georgia in Gulf South Conference baseball action at Billy Grant Field Saturday afternoon.

Bailey, who was making just his fifth start of the season, allowed five hits in the game, including a pair of solo home runs, and walked none while recording seven strikeouts to improve to 4-2 overall. He was especially dominant after an hour and five minute rain delay in the fifth inning as he surrendered just two hits while retiring the final 11 batters he faced in the contest.

Sumner McWhorter gave West Georgia (25-13, 17-10) the lead in the top of the first inning as he hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right that put UWG up 1-0.

After loading the bases with only one out and not scoring in the bottom of the first, Valdosta State (24-14, 15-10) claimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bryant Hayman opened the inning with a single through the left side of the infield before Kevin Cruz hit his eighth home run of the season off the scoreboard in left-center to put VSU in front 2-1.

Payton Mann knotted the game at 2-2 with his second home run of the year to open the top of the fifth before the contest was halted due to lightning for an hour and five minutes.

While West Georgia struggled getting base runners in the late innings, Valdsota State had one erased by an inning ending double play in the sixth before leaving the bases loaded in the seventh inning and one on in the eighth.

After squandering chances in proceeding innings, the Blazers pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the ninth as Ryan Smith opened the frame with a base hit and Bobby Rice was hit by a pitch. After B.J. Harmon laid down a sacrifice bunt, Mike Reed was intentionally walked to set up a potential double play, but Michael Gouge also walked to force home Smith.

Tyler Gunnin recorded the final out of the eighth inning and one out in the ninth while allowing a hit and two walks as he fell to 0-3 for West Georgia.

The Blazers out-hit UWG nine to five, including two hits each by Hayman and Hayden Jones.

Valdosta State returns to action Wednesday, April 15 at 5:00 p.m. when it travels to Milledgeville, Ga. to take on Georgia College.
