Baseball Sweeps Christian Brothers 6-0, 4-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Valdosta State pitched a shutout in a 6-0 game one victory and utilized a seventh inning home run in a 4-3 game two victory to sweep a Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader from Christian Brothers at Nadicksbernd Field Saturday.

Mitchell Cody dominated the Bucs in the first game as he allowed just five hits in a complete game shutout. Overall, Christian Brothers (8-11, 3-8) managed just eight base runners in the game, only one of which advanced past second base. Of the 27 outs Cody recorded in the game, 16 came via ground outs, including three that began double plays as the junior faced just five batters over the minimum while improving to 4-1 on the season.

The Valdosta State offense gave Cody all the offense he would need in the first inning as the Blazers (16-10, 9-7) scored a pair of runs in the frame. After a single and a double play opened the game, Kevin Cruz doubled and scored as Hayden Jones followed with a single. A throwing error on a Bryant Hayman ground ball moved Jones to third base and he scored as Jayk Graham also reached on an error for a 2-0 VSU lead.

The Blazers added three more runs in the fifth inning when Bobby Rice opened the frame with a double and, after Dominique Smedley reached on a bunt single, scored when Mike Reed also doubled. A Michael Gouge single plated Smedley while Reed came home when Cruz singled to put Valdosta State in front by six runs.

Hayman added a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning for the game's final run.

Cruz, Reed and Jones were all 3-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in in the game while Rice also had three hits in five at-bats.

Valdosta State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two before withstanding a CBU comeback. The Blazers got their first run in the top of the third inning as Reed walked with two outs and scored when Gouge followed with a double.

Reed and Gouge teamed up for VSU's second run in the fifth inning as the Blazer second baseman singled with one out and scored as Gouge collected his second double of the game. After a pitching change, Cruz greeted CBU reliever Peyton McArthur with a double to left that scored Gouge to give VSU a three-run advantage.

Christian Brothers took advantage of a VSU error in the bottom of the sixth inning to score all three of its runs. With one out in the frame, Casey Goodwin singled before Myles Holliman reached on catcher's interference. A Cameron Coker single loaded the bases before Goodwin scored on a balk for the first CBU run of the day. A fielding error by Jones at shortstop on a ground ball by Mac Cooley allowed both Holliman and Coker to come home to knot the game at 3-3.

Cruz boosted the Blazers to the victory as, with one out in the top of the seventh inning, he sent a 0-1 pitch from McArthur over the wall in right field for his sixth home run of the year.

VSU's Kyle Andre pitched a seven-inning complete game to improve to 4-1. The junior allowed just two hits in the game and walked three while striking out four. Of the three runs he allowed in the game, only one was earned.

Both Cruz and Gouge were 2-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in in the contest while Rice finished the game 2-for-3.

The two teams conclude the three-game series with a single game beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
