DAHLONEGA, Ga. - North Georgia jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back as the Hawks defeated Valdosta State 16-6 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday.
North Georgia (13-5) scored seven runs in the third inning to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Devin Gearhart singled to open the Hawk half of the third inning before Joey Cecere also singled. Connor Hoover followed with a home run to right before VSU starter
Beau Blair (0-1) struck out a pair of batters. A hit batter and a walk followed before a fielder's choice in which the base runners advanced safely loaded the bases. Trevor Sams doubled to score all three base runners while Gearhart collected his second base hit of the inning to drive him home.
The Hawks added two more runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth before Valdosta State (13-7) finally got on the board with a run in the sixth when
Michael Gouge singled, moved to second on a
Bryant Hayman base hit, stole third and scored on a throwing error on the stolen base. However, UNG scored four more runs in the bottom of the seventh to push its lead to 14-1.
The Blazers added four more runs in the eighth inning as
B.J. Harmon singled to open the inning and moved to second on a
Mike Reed base hit. Gouge doubled home Harmon while
Hayden Jones hit a sacrifice fly that plated Reed while Cruz singled home Gouge. A
Dominique Smedley base hit drove home Cruz to cut the VSU deficit to 16-5.
North Georgia added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth while Valdosta State scored its final run in the ninth.
Gouge, who also drew two walks in the game, was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the game while Cruz finished the game with two hits in five at-bats. Blair gave up six hits and seven earned runs in 3.0 innings in his first start of the season.
Valdosta State returns to action Saturday, March 14 when it opens a three-game Gulf South Conference series against West Alabama at Billy Grant Field. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. while Sunday's single game will also start at 1:00 p.m.
