Baseball Blasts Georgia Southwestern 24-9

VALDOSTA, Ga. Valdosta State scored at least three runs in each of the first three innings as the Blazers defeated Georgia Southwestern 24-9 in non-conference baseball action at Billy Grant Field Tuesday evening.
 
Georgia Southwestern (5-15) collected two hits to score two runs. Evan Alderman walked to open the game before Brett Burgess doubled. Will Redding followed with a single that scored Alderman while Burgess came home on a sacrifice fly to put the Hurricanes up 2-0.
 
Valdosta State (13-6) answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Michael Gouge singled with one out before Bryant Hayman drew a walk. Hayden Jones followed with a double that plated Reed while Kevin Cruz singled home Hayman. Two batters later, Zac Goodno hit his first home run of the season to put VSU up 5-2.
 
GSW got a run back on a Dakota Long home run in the top of the second while Valdosta State took advantage of a two-out error to score three runs in the bottom of the second. Jones drove in two of the runs with a hit to left while Cruz followed with a double to right-center to score the VSU second baseman for an 8-3 VSU lead.
 
The Blazers added three more runs in the third inning before scoring five in the fourth while Georgia Southwestern plated its fourth run in the sixth. Hayman added his sixth home run of the season, with Gouge on base, and VSU scored a total of four runs in the bottom of the sixth to up its lead to 20-4.
 
Georgia Southwestern added two runs in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth while VSU scored its final runs in the bottom of the eight.
 
Valdosta State pounded out a season-high 27 hits in the game, led by Cruz, who was 5-for-6 with three doubles and a triple. Gouge finished the game 4-for-7 and drove in three runs while Jones also tallied three RBI, along with three hits, and Hayman drove in four runs.
 
Jared Stanley allowed one run on a hit and three walks while striking out three batters in 2.1 innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. Meanwhile, GSW's Jordan McIlwain allowed the five runs in the first inning to fall to 0-2.
 
Valdosta State returns to action Wednesday, March 11 when it travels to Dahlonega, Ga. to face North Georgia at 5:00 p.m.
