VALDOSTA, Ga. –
Bryant Hayman and
Michael Gouge each hit their first home run of the season to lead Valdosta State to a 16-1 victory over Albany State in baseball action at Billy Grant Field Wednesday evening.
After leaving four base runners, including three in scoring position, stranded in the first two innings, Valdosta State (5-0) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Gouge singled up the middle to open the frame before Hayman hit the first pitch he saw from ASU starter Cullen Coulter over the wall in centerfield. A single by
Hayden Jones followed, with Jones moving all the way to third on a failed pick off attempt by Coulter. A wild pitch plated Jones before
Bobby Rice was hit by a pitch with one out. A Jake Graham double brought Rice home and B.J. Harmon singled to put two runners on base. A wild pitch plated Graham while Harmon, who had stolen second base, also scored on the play on a throwing error by Golden Ram catcher Ryan Hickox to give VSU a 6-0 lead.
The Blazers added six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-run home run by
Michael Gouge, his first of the season. Graham also hit a sacrifice fly in the frame while
Ryan Smith added a run-scoring single and
Mike Reed a RBI double.
VSU got three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning without the benefit of a hit as it had two runners reach after being hit by a pitch and two more get on via walks. The ASU pitching staff threw four wild pitches and the frame and there was also one passed ball to allow the runs to score.
Valdosta State plated its final run in the bottom of the seventh while Albany State (1-5) scored its only run on a double steal in the top of the eighth.
The Blazers finished with 11 hits in the game, including three by Gouge, who drove in two and also scored twice. Hayman finished with three RBI and two runs scored while Jones and Graham each had two hits. The Blazers also drew 11 walks and had five players reach after being hit by a pitch.
Jared Stanley pitched 1.1 innings in relief and allowed three hits, but no runs to improve to 2-0 on the season.
