One Goal the Difference in Soccer Loss to Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. - A second half goal proved to be the difference for Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon in Clinton, Miss., as the Valdosta State soccer team suffered a 1-0 Gulf South Conference loss to a tough Lady Choctaw squad.

The Blazers fell to 3-7 overall after the loss and saw their league record drop to 2-4. Meanwhile, the Lady Choctaws improved to 7-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play. MC currently represents one of four teams in the GSC with just one conference loss, and four of the Blazers' seven losses have been decided by a single goal.

The Blazers went on the offensive in the early going of the contest, earning two corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of play. Kayla Robles, Suvi Savolainen, and Kim Caitlin Alderman combined for three shots before MC even attempted a shot, but both defenses held throughout the duration of the period to force a 0-0 tie at halftime.

The deciding goal came early in the second half, when Jess Davenport took advantage of a corner kick opportunity at the 52:36 mark and netted her seventh goal of the season.

"It was a very even game throughout the 90 minutes," said Head Coach Rebecca Nolin following the match. "They got one chance and took it well in the second half. We tried to respond by pushing numbers forward, but we just couldn't break them down to get the equalizer."

Savolainen led the push offensively for the Blazers with four shots taken on the day, while Davenport accounted for three of MC's seven shot attempts on the afternoon.

The Blazers get a break from conference play this Friday in a South Region showdown against the nationally ranked Tampa Spartans. The contest on October 9th is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. at The VSU Soccer Complex in Valdosta, Ga.
