Soccer Falls 1-0 to No. 8 Rollins to End Season

An amazing run in 2014 ended on Sunday after a South Region semifinal loss to the Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla.  A Paxton Sickler goal on a penalty kick in the first half of play held up, as eighth-ranked Rollins defeated Valdosta State 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon.

Rollins (17-2-0) controlled the action for much of the first half, during which it out-shot Valdosta State 13 to 1. After the Tars first eight attempts of the game were wide of the goal, RC finally cracked the scoreboard in the 21st minute when Emma Jones was fouled in the box. The ensuing penalty kick by Sickler found the lower left corner of the net to establish a 1-0 lead for Rollins.

The Tars managed four more shots in the half, although none on goal, before Valdosta State had its first scoring chance in the 36th minute when Zahimara Fantauzzi fired the ball towards the Rollins goal. However, RC goalkeeper Mary Spring hauled in the shot to maintain the Rollins advantage at the intermission.

The second half was more closely contested, as Rollins took six shots and the Blazers two. Both VSU shots came early in the half, including a shot on goal by Erin Hill in the 56th minute that was corralled by Spring. Meanwhile, Olivia Mills made a pair of saves for Valdosta State.

Valdosta State maintained control of the ball throughout much of the last 10 minutes of the match, but was unable to get a shot off. The Blazers saw their outstanding season come to an end with a record of 12 wins, seven losses and two ties.
