VALDOSTA, Ga. - A blistering goal off the foot of Maegen Doyle in the closing minutes of regulation helped the Blazers finish with a 1-1 tie against the Newberry Wolves in non-conference action at The VSU Soccer Complex on Tuesday night.

The tie moved the Blazers, who now hold the seventh place position in the South Region rankings, to 8-5-2 on the season and pushed the Wolves to a record of 9-3-3 overall.

Newberry capitalized on a free kick opportunity in the first half to give the Wolves an early lead at the 17:26 mark. The Blazers committed a foul ten yards outside of the 18-yard box, and Rachael Jonas struck the free chance into the high corner just out of Olivia Mills reach to give Newberry the 1-0 advantage.

The score remained locked in favor of the Wolves until the 86th minute of the match, when freshman Doyle received a header pass from Zahimara Fantauzzi and launched a missile into the left netting to tie the contest up at 1-1.

Both teams saw scoring chances in the two extra periods, but strong play by both keepers held the contest knotted up at one apiece throughout the remainder of play.

The Blazers outshot the Wolves 14-12 in the contest and posted several near-miss shots, including a free kick opportunity from 30 yards out by Caroline Moore that missed the top left corner of crossbar by inches. Valdosta State also fired off 10 shots on goal against Newberry's seven.

Valdosta State will wrap up the regular season with two road matches this weekend, beginning with a contest in Pensacola, Fla. against the West Florida Argonauts. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. EST start and can be followed live right here at www.vstateblazers.com!
