Graduate Assistant Coach

Matt Kuhns

In his second year as a graduate assistant with the Blazers, Matt Kuhns has translated the passion and knowledge for the game of basketball that he demonstrated as a player for the Blazers into an invaluable asset on the sidelines for head coach Mike Helfer.

Kuhns began his collegiate playing career at Danville Area Community College in 2002-03. He averaged 6.2 points a game during his initial season and set the DACC single game record for three-pointers made when he connected on seven in a contest. The next season, Kuhns upped his scoring average to 13.8 points a game as a sophomore in 2003-04. His season was highlighted by setting the Jaguars' single season mark for three pointers made as he connected on 96 during the year.

Kuhns was recruited by Helfer to Southern Poly following the end of his career with DACC and joined the Southern Poly squad as Helfer left to become the Blazers' head man. He averaged 8.4 points and 3.2 rebounds a game during his junior season while leading SPSU to a 23-11 record and a spot in the NAIA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.

Kuhns chose to once again join Helfer the next season as he transferred to Valdosta State prior to the 2006-07 season. His ability to shoot the ball was once again displayed during the season as he connected on 42-of-123 three pointers while playing in all 29 games for a VSU squad that advanced to the NCAA South Regional and played to a 20-9 record on the year. He averaged 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds a game on the season while tallying 16 assists and 12 steals. He started five games and scored in double figures three times, including a career-high 16 in a pair of games. The 42 threes he hit during the season accounted for nearly 74 percent of his 57 made field goals.

The Mahomet, Ill. native played his prep career at Mahomet-Seymour High. His duties with the Blazers include working with the VSU's guards and wing positions while also assisting with tape exchange, recruiting visits and the preseason conditioning program.
