Tara Nelson

Tara Nelson joined the Valdosta State volleyball staff from Coker College in South Carolina after a year of teaching math at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, N.C.

While at Coker, Nelson was a two sport student-athlete. As a basketball player she was named a starter in her freshman season and also elected Newcomer of the Year. Volleyball, however, is where she excelled.

Nelson was named Freshman of the Year in her first season at Coker and First Team All-Conference as a senior. In between, as a four-year starter, she managed to set every Coker College assist record there is for volleyball. Nelson holds the all-time records for assists in a game (61), average assists per game (11.02 per game), assists in a season (1199) and assists in a career (4285). While at Coker, Nelson helped the team to its best finish in team history.

After she graduated from Coker with a degree in secondary math education in 2007, she went on to serve as a setter for the U.S. Select Team as they competed in Australia. She was named Most Valuable Player for the team.

Nelson comes from a family of athletes. Her sister Britteny plays basketball at Georgia Southern while her brother Ryan plays basketball at Valdosta State.

Nelson is also studying for her Master's in secondary math education.
