Ashley Mayhue
Ashley Mayhue enters her third season as assistant coach for the softball team. She has been diligently working under Head Coach Thomas Macera since her graduation from Valdosta State University in December of 2007.
While majoring in early childhood at VSU Mayhue also played softball for the Lady Blazers. She notched two years as a pitcher and a utility player. In her final season with the Lady Blazers Mayhue played in 26 games, and in 39 at bats had 11 hits, three runs, two homeruns, one double and 12 runs batted in.
Last season, Mayhue helped Macera lead the Lady Blazers to an all-time best 57-8 season that culminated in the Gulf South Conference Championship. The team broke records for most wins in a season, runs (503), hits (638), runs batted in (452), doubles (105), home runs (98) and bases on balls (175). On the pitching rubber, the 2009 squad set a new standard for complete games at 65.
There were also new individual records in 2009. Andi Braswell swung for a new high batting average of .436 and scored 69 runs. She notched 96 hits on the year. Marti Littlefield set school, conference and national records for home runs and RBIs with 25 homers and 103 RBIs on the year.
In her first season as Macera's assitant coach, Mayhue helped guide the Lady Blazers to a 48-19 finish with an impressive 17-6 record in the Gulf South Conference. The Lady Blazers also made a strong homestand going 18-6 at the Softball Complex. Valdosta State finished the season second in the East Division of the GSC and made a regional appearance.
Alongside Macera, Mayhue helped guide individual players to play an award-worthy season. Alex Acosta, Robin Williams and Kristina Ely earned All-America honors. Kristen Lindsey broke the school record for most strikeouts in a career and Andi Braswell broke the at-bats in a season record.
Five seniors on the team earned All-South Region recognition as well. Acosta and Williams were named first team while Ely, Braswell and Shannon Cleland were named to the second team. Acosta also won her second GSC Player of the Year award.
Before her time at Valdosta State the Gray, Ga. native attended Chipola College in Marianna, Fla. for two years.
Mayhue works primarily with the pitchers but also shares her knowledge with hitting and infield.
