VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State senior golfer Brent Witcher has received a sponsor's exemption to compete in the Nationwide Tour's 2009 South Georgia Classic Presented by First State Bank at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in April.

The South Georgia Classic, now in its third year, has quickly become one of the premiere events on the Nationwide Tour. The 2009 tournament will be held Thursday, April 23 through Sunday, April 26.

Witcher will miss two days of the pre-tournament festivities, including one day of pro-am play and a practice day, as he joins his Blazer teammates at the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament on the Monday and Tuesday of the event.

"Considering that the Nationwide attracts players from all over the nation and world, its very exciting to have one of the local community players be given a sponsor's to showcase his skills in this year's event," said James McGahee, CEO of South Georgia Medical Center, the host organization of the tournament, in making the announcement.

Witcher's selection to compete in the 2009 event comes after a remarkable 2007-08 golf season that saw him tally 11 Top 10 finishes, including three first-place showings, in 15 tournaments. He was selected the GSC Golfer of the Year in April 2008 and later earned All-America honors. Witcher was also a finalist for the Nickalaus Award, given to the nation's top NCAA Division II golfer, and represented the United States in the prestigious Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Cup competition in Tokyo, Japan last summer.

"I'm very excited and honored to be chosen to play in the South Georgia Classic, because I know they have a lot of people that want to get this exemption," Witcher said on learning of the news. "It's a well-run tournament with a lot of good players and I feel privileged that First State Bank and South Georgia Medical Center have picked me to represent Valdosta."
