BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Valdosta State women's cross country placed 7th while the men's cross country team placed 8th in the Gulf South Conference Championship on Saturday.
For the women's squad Angelina Horne had the best finish for the Lady Blazers finishing 11th with a time of 19:57. Ashley Luther placed 30th with a recorded time of 20:56 while Jordanne Helton was six seconds behind placing 32nd. Neka Gibbs finished 60th with a time of 22:33 and Ashley Hiott placed 63rd with a time of 22:51. Tiffany Zuganelis rounded out the day for the Lady Blazers placing 67th with a time of 23:03.
As a squad, VSU had a total of 188 points placing 7th out of 14 squads. Harding University took 1st place with a total of 20 points with taking first through fifth place. University of West Florida came in 2nd place with a total of 85 points. Harding University's Katy Grant took 1st place with a time of 18:40.
As for the men's squad, VSU placed 8th out of 11 squads with a total of 205 points. Harding University took 1st place with a total of 31 points. University of West Georgia came in 2nd place with a total of 68 points. Harding University's Daniel Kirwa claimed 1st place.
For the men's squad, Chris Rice led the Blazers by placing 25th with a time of 27:38. Alan McGough placed 44th with a time of 28:27 while DJ Smith was just behind him placing 46th in a time of 28:35. Corey Stejback finished the Blazers top 50 finished by placing 50th with a time of 28:49. Brandon Joyner placed 53rd with a time of 29:05 and Steve Cary placed 56th with a time of 29:14. Austin McDonald placed 59th with a time of 29:28 while Juan Tejada (29:46,64th) and Terence Boyd (30:34,71st) rounded out the Blazers showing on Saturday.
Both women and men's cross country squads will return to action in the NCAA South Regional in Tampa, Fla. on November 7.
