Men's Basketball Schedule Announced
VSU opens season November 16
VALDOSTA, Ga. - Games against Delta State, Augusta State and Tampa highlight the 2009-10 Valdosta State men's basketball schedule, announced by Blazer head coach Mike Helfer on Friday.
The Blazers open the 2009-10 season at home against Carver Bible on Monday, November 16 before also playing St. Thomas and Florida Memorial in the P.E. Complex on November 20 and 21, respectively. The remainder of the November schedule includes road games at Fort Valley State November 24 and Clayton State November 28 as well as a home contest against Georgia Southwestern November 30.
The December portion of the schedule is heavily laden with home games as the Blazers begin the month with contests December 4 and 5 against Saint Leo and Palm Beach Atlantic in The Loop Pizza Grill Classic while hosting Columbus State December 7. After a road game at Tampa December 12, the Blazers return to the P.E. Complex on the 15th to face Delta State. VSU closes out the month with three straight road contest, including games against Lynn and Barry in the Pepsi Doubletree Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. December 20 and 21 as well as a New Years Eve game at Albany State.
The remainder of the non-conference schedule includes an away contest at Lambuth January 9 as well as home games against Augusta State January 16 and Lambuth February 6.
"I think this is one of the most challenging schedules we have had at Valdosta State since I arrived," said Helfer in making the announcement. "Our non-conference games and our crossover game versus Delta State will surely get us prepared for the always tough Gulf South Conference."
Valdosta State will begin defense of its 2007-08 GSC East Division crown on January 7 when the Blazers visit North Alabama. The remainder of January includes conference home contests against West Florida January 13, West Alabama January 16 and Alabama-Huntsville January 23 as well as a league game on the road at West Georgia January 30.
February concludes the regular season with home contests versus North Alabama on the 4th and West Georgia on the 27th while the Blazers visit West Florida February 10, West Alabama February 18 and Alabama-Huntsville February 20.
The GSC Tournament, which will once again be played in Southaven, Miss., will be held March 3-7 while NCAA South Regional play is scheduled for March 13-16.
Valdosta State returns eight letterwinners, including four starters, off of its 2008-09 team that compiled a 24-7 record while advancing to the GSC Tournament championship game and the NCAA South Regional Tournament.
