Henderson State Game Notes

Blazers, Reddies play Saturday at 3 pm

Today's Game: Valdosta State returns home to Bazemore-Hyder Stadium as the Blazers host Henderson State in VSU's 2009 Homecoming game. The Blazers enter the game with a 2-3 record, including a 2-2 mark in Gulf South Conference play after a 31-23 loss at Delta State last week, while HSU is 3-3 and 3-1 in league play, including a 54-0 victory over West Georgia last weekend. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff.

VSU averages 418.4 yards of total offense on the season while surrendering 335.0 yards per game. Quarterback Kellen Lewis leads the offense as he has completed 127-of-198 passes for 1,250 yards and five touchdowns while wide receiver Cedric Jones has caught 33 passes for 305 yards and two scores. Linebacker Larry Dean leads the defense with 42 total tackles, including 6.0 for loss.

Henderson State is averaging 400.8 yards per game while surrendering 373.7 per outing. Running back Stefon Ceaser leads the Reddies run-based attack with 94.7 yards per game as HSU tallies 212.7 rushing yards per outing as a squad. while Lardester Hicks-Green leads the Statesmen defense with 44 tackles, 18 of which came last week at Ouachita Baptist.

The 2009 season marks the 28th year of Valdosta State football while the Henderson State game will be the 316th game in school history. The Blazers have won 212 contests, lost 99 and tied four times, a winning percentage of .679.

Jones Sets Receiving Record: Valdosta State's Cedric Jones became the most prolific receiver in Gulf South Conference and Valdosta State history when he caught 14 passes against Delta State on October 1. The 14 receptions game Jones a total of 258 in his career, surpassing Sean Pender's school and league record of 247 set between 1992 and 1996. Jones now ranks 13th all-time in the NCAA Division II record books and is 65 behind Division II record holder Clarence Coleman of Ferris State, who caught 323 passes during his career.
