Cross Country races in Memphis

Blazers, Lady Blazers makes strong showing

MEMPHIS, TENN. - The Valdosta State men's cross country team raced to fourteenth place and women%u2019s cross country team raced to sixteenth place at the Brooks Memphis Twilight XC Classic Saturday.

The women's squad opened the day with a few of top 100 finishes as Angelia Horne recorded the team's best time of 20:08 to finish 48th, with 11 seconds behind Jordanne Helton recorded a time of 20:19 to finish 56th while Ashley Luther finished in 89th with a time of 21:43. Ashley Hiott placed 103th with a time of 22:15 and Neka Gibbs finished two second behind in 104th. Tiffany Zuganelis placed 114th, Ashley Claaseen finished 128th, and Andrea Smith rounded out the Lady Blazers squad showing on Saturday.

As a squad, VSU finished with 400 points and an average time 21:21. Arkansas Tech University's Bailee Miller claimed individual medalist honors with a time of 18:23, and Samford University claimed team honors with 48 points.

University of South Alabama won the men%u2019s 4 mile race with 43 points. Ole Miss' Barnabas Kirui claimed individual medalist with a time of 19:00.

For the Blazers, Chris Rice finished 57th with a recorded time of 21:57 while Alan McGough finished 75th with a time of 22:18. Austin McDonald was just 10 seconds behind with a finish of 81st. D.J. Smith recorded a time of 22:48 in 93rd, and two seconds behind with a finish of 94th was Steven Cary. Terence Boyd finished 119th with a recorded time of 23:40 while Corey Stejback finished 120th with a time of 23:43. Kenny Brooks, Daniel McCormick, Marc Kaiser rounded out the Blazers showing on with top 150 finishes for VSU.

The Blazers and Lady Blazers return to action next weekend when they travel to Huntsville, Ala. for the Fleet Feet Sports/ Earl Jacoby Memorial.
