Lady Blazers Surge to 5-1
VSU Takes Down Stillman, Clark Atlanta
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Valdosta State surged to 5-1 to start the season with wins over Stillman and Clark Atlanta Saturday. Neither team could take a game off Valdosta State as the Lady Blazers cruised to 3-0 wins.
The Lady Blazers started against Stillman. After winning a close game one, 25-22, Valdosta State turned it on in the next two games to sweep Stillman, 25-22, 25-11, 25-16.
Ruthie King led the way with 16 kills on a .536 attacking percentage. Emelia Saulter passed out 37 assists and notched 12 digs to lead Valdosta State in both categories. Freshman Katie Onushko had three block assists while King and freshman Tania Tauiliili were in on two each.
The Lady Blazer defense held Stillman to a mere .030 attacking percentage.
In the first game against Clark Atlanta, Valdosta State fell behind, 4-1, early, but the Lady Blazers bounced back to only allow four more points to CAU the rest of the game, winning 25-8. Chelsea Luttfring served six straight times to put VSU ahead, 7-5, and the Lady Blazers did not look back.
After winning the second game, 25-14, Valdosta State was down again in the third. The Lady Blazers fell behind, 4-0, but again Luttfring brought them back. Behind eight straight Luttfring serves, Valdosta State took a 10-6 lead. Onushko was next to serve and went for six uninterrupted points, but it was King and Macy Markham who led the team in aces, each with four.
Onushko led the Lady Blazers with eight kills while Tauiliili and Chelsea Proffitt each had seven. Saulter gave 30 assists and King led the team in digs with six.
The Lady Blazers will take on Arkansas Tech and Montevallo at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively on Sunday.
