VSU Falls to Armstrong Atlantic
Lady Blazers Season Ended by AASU, 5-1
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The No. 3-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team put away Valdosta State by a convincing 5-1 score. It will be the 10th time in school history that AASU made it to the NCAA Division II National Championship match.
Valdosta State was ranked fourth nationally and proved to be one of the final four teams playing this season. Unfortunately though, the Lady Blazers could only score one point in the match against the Lady Pirates.
Natali Gumbrecht and Tina Trautmann teamed up to take down No. 7 Sona Novakova and Gabrielle Kovacs in the second doubles spot. After that, VSU would not be able to take another match.
After falling behind 2-1 in doubles, the closest the Lady Blazers came in singles play was in the second singles position. Raphaelle Durante went down in the first set, 6-4, and was down in the second, 2-1, before her match was stopped after AASU clinched.
Armstrong Atlantic State's 19th-ranked Kovacs defeated Kristel de Groot, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, then top-ranked Novakova defeated No. 14-ranked Gumbrecht, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. 30th-ranked Martina Beckmann then closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Trautmann at No. 3 singles.
