Valdosta State Wins First Round

No. 4 VSU Sweeps No. 15 Northwood

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Fourth-ranked Valdosta State beat No. 15 Northwood, 5-0, in the first round of nationals Wednesday. With the win, the Lady Blazers will go on to face Hawaii Pacific at 1 p.m. Thursday. Valdosta State beat HPU, 6-3, in the only match in which the teams met this season.

The Lady Blazers jumped to an early 3-0 lead thanks to excellent double play by teams of Raphaelle Durante and Karine Redon, Natali Gumbrecht and Tina Trautmann, and Sonya Haggstrom and Kristel de Groot.

Durante and Redon ran away from Robert Huetter and Ashley Neumann, 8-3, in the top spot. Gumbrecht and Trautmann beat Darina Berkova and Raphaela Perisic, 8-4, while Haggstrom and de Groot took care of Sabrina Kihm and Nicole Kromer in an 8-6 decision.

Once the VSU set the tone in doubles, there were only two matches to secure the victory. Redon supplied the first from the fifth spot with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Perisic while Haggstrom quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-0 romp of Kromer.
