CLEVELAND, Miss. – Valdosta State outscored the Delta State Lady Statesmen 10-1 on Saturday in Cleveland, Miss. to claim a doubleheader sweep of DSU (1-0, 9-1) and jump to third place in the Gulf South Conference softball standings.
The Blazers reeled off nine hits in game one, but DSU starter Taylor Tucker scattered the offensive attack of the VSU bats and allowed just one run in seven innings. The run crossed in the third inning, when
Danielle Patterson led off the frame with a single to right field. Jamie Phillips followed with her second base hit of the day, and
Kiley Rusen shot a single back through the middle to drive Patterson across and give VSU a 1-0 lead.
The run proved to be the only one to score for either team, and
Caitlyn Calhoun (25-4) turned the lone run into her league-leading 25
th win of the year. Calhoun's winning effort included just five hits allowed, and the senior posted seven strikeouts to improve her season total to 219.
VSU matched their hit total in game two with nine more hits, but this time around, the red and black turned those hits into nine runs. Five different Blazers drove in RBI's in the game, and
Taylor Hartenbach, Jamie Phillips, and
Kiley Rusen plated two apiece.
Brandy Morgan went 2-for-2 in the game, which improved her overall performance in the doubleheader to a 4-for-5 effort at the dish, and Phillips and Rusen teamed up for back-to-back blasts during a four-run fourth.
Huntyre Elling delivered a stellar outing in the circle with 5.1 innings of work and picked up the win to improve to 11-6 overall. The senior allowed just one run on the day, which came when Delta State swung for three of their six hits during the third inning. Elling struck out two and walked none before giving way to Calhoun, who came on to secure the mercy-rule victory with two strikeouts in the sixth.
The win boosted the Blazers to 21-9-1 in GSC play, just one game behind the second place West Florida Argonauts (23-9), who split with Shorter on Saturday. VSU improved their overall record to 37-10-2 on the year, while the Lady Statesmen fell to fifth place with a 21-11 GSC record and a 33-17 record in league play.
