Valdosta State University Athletic Hall of Fame
The Valdosta State Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2009 was inducted on February 21, 2009. The five new inductees brings the hall membership to 61. The Hall of Fame was initiated in 1997. The new inductees included:
Tommy Clark, Supporter
One of Valdosta State Athletics most ardent supporters, Tommy Clark, spent 27 years as an employee of Valdosta State College, where he worked at the circulation desk of both Powell Library and Odom Library between 1966 and 1993. He became one of VSU's most loyal and supportive athletic boosters, both financially and by way of attendance as he has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles to watch Blazer athletic events over the years.
James Dominey, Men's Basketball
A long-time fixture on the Valdosta State sideline, James Dominey spent 29 years as the head coach at Valdosta State College after serving as an assistant coach for his first three years with the school. He owns the Valdosta State men's basketball record with 436 career victories and led VSC to conference championships in 1972, 1977, 1979, 1980 and 1981. Dominey led Valdosta State to national tournament appearances on three occasions and counted 20 winning seasons among his 29 at the helm of the men's basketball team. He joins his brother Tim as the only sibling duo in the VSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Cathy McCurdy Guzay, Women's Basketball
Described by a former coach as a giant on the court despite standing just 5-foot 2-inches tall, former women's basketball player, Cathy McCurdy Guzay, was the cornerstone for the women's basketball team during the late 1970's. She helped the program to an outstanding 101 wins versus just 17 losses record during her playing days. She averaged eight points, seven steals, five rebounds and seven assists a game during her collegiate career.
John Hansen, Tennis
A legend in the NCAA Division II coaching ranks, John Hansen has built both the VSU men's and women's tennis teams into national powers as he has directed his teams to a combined 14 South Atlantic and Gulf South Conference championships and has been named conference Coach of the Year on 15 occasions. Now in his 36th year as head coach of the Blazers and Lady Blazers, Hansen has coached 47 All-American players and has had an athlete named All-Gulf South Conference 118 times. He has directed the VSU women's tennis team to 10 NCAA tournament appearances while his men's teams have played in NCAA postseason play 14 times. Hansen's two squads have finished in the top eight in the nation a combined 12 times, including the 2006 men's squad that won the NCAA title. He becomes just the second active coach to be named to the Valdosta State Athletic Hall of Fame.
Dallis Smith, Football
One of the Blazer football's first stars, Dallis Smith becomes the eighth player from the gridiron to be inducted. A four-year starter for the football squad at defensive back, Smith played for the Blazers from 1983 through 1986 and tallied 180 career tackles. He owns the Gulf South Conference and Valdosta State career record with 21 career interceptions while his 40 career passes broken up is also a VSU record. Smith also owns the VSU single season interception record with nine, set in 1986
