Dance Team Profile

The Dance Team at Valdosta State Univesity is a High-Energy Dance Team that incorporates jazz dance technique with hip-hop, pom, and funk dance styles. The dance team consists of a maximum of 25 dancers. The regular season begins in August and ends in April with NDA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The VSU Dance Team entertains crowds and supports VSU athletics at all home football games, men's and women's home basketball games, university functions, public schools events and community events.

Program Requirements

Academic Standards and Policies 
-All squad members must maintain full-time status (minimum of 12 hours) for both spring and fall semesters
-All members must maintain a 2.0 cummulative GPA
Any squad member who falls below the required GPA and/or the 12-hour student status will be removed from the team

Image and Attitude
-As a member of the Valdosta State University Dance Team, you are a representative of our University. Therefore, it is imperative that you conduct yourself in an appropriate manner at all times. This includes maintaing an enthusiastic attitude and projecting a positive image.
-As a representative of VSU, you are to follow the student code of conduct regulations that are outlined in the VSU student handbook
-If you are chosen as a member, there will be additional rules and information that you must adhere to, and deviation from these rules could result in dismissal from the team

Audition Guidelines

Stage 1:
-Center floor stretch to warm up
-Across the floor combinations of kicks, turns and leaps
-Short jazz and hip-hop combination will be taught
-There will be a first cut made and the remaining dancers will continue on to the next state

Stage 2:
-A second jazz combination will be taught and performed for the judges
-Each dancer will individually show the following skills:
     -Double Pirouette
     -Triple Pirouette
     -Fouette Turns
     -Split Straddle Leap
     -Calypso
     -Grand Jete Leap
     -Flexibility/Extension Holds
     -A 45-second to one minute dance routine, any style that will show their strength and ability Please bring your own music!
*Please feel free to audition if you do not have all of these skills. There is an element of teaching that occurs during Red Hots practices.

After the try-out has been completed, the names of the dancers that have made the team will be announced. A short meeting will occur immediately following to give out information pertaining to the following year.

Please come dressed in dance appropriate clothing, shoes, and have your hair back and out of your face. Please, no loose fitting clothing (t-shirts, baggy pants or shorts) and no tennis shoes.

In the case that one is not unable to attend tryouts, a video tryout is acceptable, but only if it has been discussed with Head Coach Kelli Fields.
